About Ancient Ruins

Ancient Ruins covers the classical Mediterranean in both its standing and its fallen state. The landmarks are stylized homages in the manner of classical architecture, such as a Parthenon-style Doric temple and a Colosseum-style amphitheater segment, rather than measured replicas of any real monument.

What's inside

  • Greek and sacred: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns, a Doric temple with a sacred fire in its cella, a ruined temple with toppled drums and climbing ivy, and a round tholos
  • Roman and civic: an amphitheater segment, a hillside Greek theater, a triumphal arch, an aqueduct span, a nymphaeum fountain with a lion spout and a two-story villa
  • Ground and water: meadow, flagstone, verge, scrub and terrace tiles, a connectable paved Roman via, stone stairs, a processional walkway and an Aegean shore set with open sea and corner pieces
  • Props and statuary: altars, tripod braziers, oil lamps, amphorae, a sarcophagus, a market stall, a marble goddess, a fallen statue, an equestrian bronze, a caryatid, a herm milestone and a rostral column
  • Vehicles and sky: a racing chariot, an ox cart loaded with amphorae, a beached trireme prow, three sky domes and a cloud set

Set-pieces and moods

Five decoratable prebuilds, temple_sanctuary, ruined_forum, theatre, nymphaeum_spring and via_crossroads, each hold a static base, a decor group of named nodes you can show, hide or replace, and empty slot anchors for your own props.

The GLBs ship in the DAY palette, and palettes.json lists all four moods with their background, sun and hemisphere-light values: DAY, DUSK, WEATHERED with grime, moss and ivy in misty light, and NIGHT, where altars, braziers, torches and oil lamps light the sanctuary by fire.

Scale and setup

One unit is one meter for heights, Y-up, +Z forward, with ground tiles on a 4 m grid. Each asset has a GLB and a typed React Three Fiber component, and the combined ancient-ruins.glb catalog loads the whole kit in one request. It suits mythology games, history lessons, museum-style explainers and Mediterranean travel scenes.

Ancient Ruins FAQ

The ground tiles have real thickness, so where they meet the walking surface sits at y = 0.30. The terrace tile climbs from 0.30 to 1.10 across its depth, and carts and chariots on the Roman via stand on the paving at about y = 0.37. Inside the prebuilds the tiles are sunk instead, so there y = 0 is the paved ground.
Each dome is display-sized: an inward-facing hemisphere with a radius of 2.6 m that only shows from inside. Scale it up to enclose your scene (a 300 m radius is a scale of about 115) and keep the camera's far plane beyond it. Give it an unlit material such as MeshBasicMaterial with vertex colors so your scene lights don't shade the sky.
The coast is a connectable set of water_open_sea, a straight shore and inside and outside corners. The water surface sits at y = 0.16 on every tile with the sea bed below it, so edges meet cleanly. As authored, the straight shore has land along +Z and sea toward -Z. The swell is baked into the geometry and does not move on its own.
GreekTheatre is the standalone hillside theater with its cavea, orchestra and skene. The Theatre component loads prebuilds/theatre.glb, a dressed set-piece that adds a processional walkway across the front plus an altar, statues, braziers, an oil lamp and a stele as toggleable decor. Its slots include slot_performer at the center of the orchestra for placing a character.
Every asset is a web-optimized GLB (binary glTF) with Draco-compressed geometry — 63 files, 13.9 MB in total, about 2,224,321 triangles across the pack. Load them in plain three.js with GLTFLoader plus DRACOLoader — or in React Three Fiber with drei's useGLTF hook. The licensed download also includes typed React Three Fiber components for the pack.
