The hero landmark: a Duilian-style rostral column. A stepped travertine base and a moulded marble pedestal cut with the victory (C DVILIO COS / ROSTRA CAPTA); an Attic base, a fluted shaft and a Doric capital; and bristling from the shaft in three tiers, twelve bronze ship-prows taken from the enemy line — each a curved bow with its stem-post rolled into a scroll, painted eyes, wale strakes and the three-finned ram at the waterline. On top stands the admiral himself in bronze, cloaked, spear planted. Patina has run green down the flutes under every prow.
