A Roman nymphaeum: a coursed marble wall framed as an aedicule — two fluted Corinthian columns on pedestals carry a moulded entablature and a pediment with raking cornices, acroteria and a wreath in the tympanum — around an arched niche with a scalloped conch half-dome sheltering a turned marble krater. Below it a bronze lion mask, gone green in its mane, spouts a stream into a moulded basin with a thick lip; ripples spread where it lands, algae stains the wall under the spout, and the pool spills through a notch in the rim into a small trough at the front.
