Mile Post
The cast mile post at the lineside, whitewashed every spring and read from both directions: the mileage in raised numerals on a flattened face, a moulded cap, and a concrete foot settled into the grass. Small, cheap and everywhere — the prop that makes a length of plain line feel measured rather than generic.
