About Airfield — Small Airport Kit

Airfield is a small general-aviation field you can lay out tile by tile, from the runway threshold to the fuel farm. Every asset shares one vertex-color material and is a single merged geometry, so each one renders in a single draw call.

What's inside

  • Runway and taxiway: runway straights capped by a threshold with piano keys, taxiway straight, corner, T-junction and 4-way tiles, an unmarked concrete apron tile and a run-up holding point
  • Buildings: a hangar with its doors stacked open on a tool-lined interior, a control tower with a glazed cab, an FBO terminal, a flying-club office, a maintenance workshop, a row of T-hangars, a fire and rescue station and an open GSE shed
  • Fuel and ground support: a fuel farm with two AVGAS tanks and a dispenser, a ground power unit, a passenger airstair, wheel chocks, tie-down anchors, a tow bar and a fire extinguisher cart
  • Vehicles: a pushback tug, a fuel truck, a baggage cart train, a FOLLOW ME car and a high-wing four-seat light aircraft
  • Lighting and signs: runway edge lights, blue taxiway lights, a PAPI array, a rotating beacon, apron floodlights, an approach light bar and hold-short, location and distance-remaining signs
  • Surroundings: grass, mowed infield, gravel overrun and scrub tiles, poplar windbreaks, chain-link fence bays, a sliding security gate, a windsock and four sky domes

Set-pieces and moods

Five decoratable prebuilds ship as a static base with named decor nodes and empty slot anchors for your own props: hangar_apron, fuelling_bay, tower_forecourt, holding_point and ga_parking_row.

The palette comes in four moods: Clear Day, Golden Hour, Overcast and Night Field, with matching sky domes for each, from cumulus over cobalt to a starry night with a moon.

Scale and setup

One unit is one meter, Y-up, +Z forward, with ground tiles on a 4 m module and assets pivoting bottom-center on y = 0. Buildings and support vehicles use a reduced, stylized scale so they read together on a small field. Each asset ships as a GLB with a typed React Three Fiber component, plus a combined Draco-compressed airfield.glb catalog. It suits flight game hubs, airport management games, aviation explainers and travel scenes.

Airfield — Small Airport Kit FAQ

Lay them on a 4 m grid, where the taxiway pavement edges mate at x = ±1.55. Wherever a taxiway meets the runway, use the T-junction, since its stem carries the hold-short bar. Use the 4-way where taxiways cross or enter the apron, never as a stand-in for a T. The runway tiles end to end as one spine, capped with road_runway_threshold.
Buildings and support vehicles are authored at a reduced, stylized scale so the whole field reads together in a compact scene. Heights still use 1 unit = 1 m and ground tiles stay on the 4 m module. Place these pieces as they come rather than scaling them up to real-world sizes, or they will dwarf the runway and the trainer aircraft.
Yes. Each set-piece has a static base, named decor nodes you can show, hide or swap, and empty slot_* anchors that only carry a transform. Read a slot such as nodes.slot_aircraft_2 from useGLTF and wrap a component in a group at its position and rotation, for example the bundled LightAircraftCessna, or any model of your own.
The control tower cab and its stair windows glow warm, the apron canopy lamps light up, and the airfield signs light only their legends: the hold-short lettering, the amber taxiway location panel and the distance-remaining numeral. The starry_night_dome adds stars, a moon and a faint town glow on the horizon. All color comes from palettes.json, so you can re-theme it.
The full set is about 525k triangles, and every asset is one merged geometry with one draw call. Ground tiles are light, starting at around 220 triangles for plain tarmac, while the detailed heroes such as the fuel farm, flying-club office and hangar run into the tens of thousands. Load the individual GLBs you place rather than the whole catalog for a lean scene.
Every asset is a web-optimized GLB (binary glTF) with Draco-compressed geometry — 59 files, 2.5 MB in total, about 525,365 triangles across the pack. Load them in plain three.js with GLTFLoader plus DRACOLoader — or in React Three Fiber with drei's useGLTF hook. The licensed download also includes typed React Three Fiber components for the pack.
