Inspection Pit
The fitter's pit: a brick-lined trench between the rails, deep enough to stand up in, with the rails carried on the pit walls themselves, end steps down into it, duckboards on the floor and an inspection lamp bracketed to the end wall burning amber all night. Set a locomotive over it and the yard finally has somewhere to fix one.
