Black water gone still in a mud hollow. The bank slumps down to it wet and dark at the waterline and dries out toward its edge, where the mud has cracked into curling flakes. The water is a dull, faintly rippling sheet with darker swirls, skinned in places with an oil sheen that catches a bruised rainbow, and scummed green where a clump of dead reeds stands at the margin, some snapped over, a few still carrying their brown seed heads. A swollen plank with a splintered end and a bent nail drifts at the edge, a tyre caked in mud has half sunk into it, and a dead branch, a rusted can and a few stones lie along the bank.
