A witch’s broom leaned up with her hat tipped against it: a tapering handle with a knot and a leather thong through the end, and a fat sheaf of birch gathered onto it — bound with three wraps of twine where it is narrowest, bulging below the binding, ribbed all round with straw and worn down to a ragged foot that has splayed flat under the broom’s own weight. A pointed hat resting on its own wavy brim with a buckled band and a tip that has flopped over onto the broomstick, and loose straws on the ground beside them.
