The open snowfield: a wind-carved plain of dry polar snow in real low relief. Sastrugi ridges run down the prevailing wind with a blunt, cold-shadowed prow into the wind and a long lit tail in its lee; wind scoops hollow out blue just upwind of each prow; fine wind ripples cross the flats and soft pillows swell between. Faces into the wind grade to shadow blue, the lee to sunlit white. The relief feathers to a level rim so any tile mates with any neighbour at any rotation.
