Fire Hydrant
The block icon: a lathe-turned cast-iron hydrant in fire red with its domed bonnet, a yellow cap on the pumper nozzle and one on each side outlet, the hex operating nut on top, a chain hanging off one cap and the paint chipped back to bare metal round the base. Every American street has exactly one, and this is it.
