The smith's open forge, the brightest working fire in the village: coals heaped proud on a raised stone hearth under a tapering iron hood that draws up an open flue through the roof, a billet lying red on the lathe-turned anvil with the hammer and tongs still beside it, bellows at the fire's cheek, a slack tub, bar stock waiting in the corner and a rack of finished blades — all under a lean-to of tarred timber whose side walls stop behind the fire so the light throws clear on three sides.
