A barred culvert mouth low in a hand-laid wall bay: seven forged bars in a hinged iron frame padlocked shut against its staple, one bar filed clean out and only its snapped stubs left in the rails, and behind them a blind shaft going back a quarter of a metre into the dark. The invert still runs — damp bleeds down three courses of the apron and the moss is thickest right at the outflow.
