Nobody ever floored this part: bare packed earth, mounded and hollowed, with two cart ruts worn along it and a standing puddle sat in the low corner where one rut runs out. Three flags of the old paving still survive at the rim, robbed out everywhere else, and there is straw trodden into the mud, loose stones half swallowed by it and a long bone lying where it settled.
