A corbelled wall gallery 4 m long: three engaged responds stand on the flags and step out through three courses of corbels to carry a laid-flagstone walkway at exactly 2.1 m — the pack's own doorway headroom, so it runs level with the head of every arch in the kit and finishes 100 mm under the room wall. The sixth baluster is gone, its snapped stump still socketed in the coping and the baluster itself lying where it rolled, three pale hollows are worn into the flags on the line a guard walks, and the torch is bracketed UNDERNEATH the gallery where it lights the room below and has burnt a four-hundred-year plume of soot across the ribbed soffit.
